walker art
Welcome to walker art. I am Cindy Walker, self-taught painter and sculptor. Born in 1956 in Louisiana, I have always had an interest in the arts. In elementary school, I remember winning first place in a poster contest...mine was of "The Little Mermaid". That brought me my first sales...pencil sketches of my friends' boyfriends I sold for a quarter! A little later, I started using oils to paint discarded brown-tone photos that my father, a portrait photographer, took of his clients. In high school, I started copying album covers, using watercolor, oils, and acrylics, and doing pencil portraits.
After many years of working and raising children, I decided to start oil painting again and found that it is my passion. I paint landscapes predominantly and absolutely love the bluebonnets of Texas, my new home. I also "paint the music", letting what I hear flow onto the canvas in abstract form. Most of my paintings are done in oil, but a few are acrylics. Some of my paintings are on canvas, but I paint a lot on 1/4-inch wood panels because it's inexpensive, often recycled, and you just can't damage it unless you really try! I also use reconditioned frames for the most part. I'm all about recycling!
About 6 years ago, I tried sculpting for the first time after being introduced to a medium called hebble, a construction material similar to cinder block but more porous and fragile. Hebble is difficult to find, so I started working with soapstone and wood, which are both very satisfying. Sculpting, to me, is meditative and therapeutic, but time-consuming, so I haven't completed very many pieces yet...but there's always something in the works.
When not painting, I'm checking out estate sales and auctions with my partner, Don. We live in Denton, Texas, with our longhaired miniature Dachsund, Sebastian, and three cockatiels (Pearl, Picasso, and Bernard), three parakeets (Uccello, Uni, and Houdini), and two finches (Pete and Peach).
All of the paintings and sculptures you see on this site are for sale. I hope you like what you see! Thanks for visiting, and come back often, as I'm always adding new pieces.
